True Story: Celestine V Hermitage Carved in Rock

San Bartolomeo in Legio is not a simple mountain chapel. It is a church entirely carved into the living rock of the Majella, built around year 1000. Here lived for years Pietro Angelerio, the hermit who became Pope Celestine V, the only Pope to resign.

Celestine monks chose this rock balcony at 700m to isolate from the world. Altar, chapels and facade are carved directly from the wall. National Geographic listed it among the most spectacular rock churches in the world.

Local Tip from Sant'egidio alla vibrata

I'm local from Sant'egidio alla vibrata and go 3 times a year. Do this:

1. Start at 9:00, not 11:00. After 10:30 De Contra parking gets full on weekends.
2. On way back stop at De Contra bar for coffee and arrosticini. It's the only one and very friendly.
3. Download offline Maps.me, signal drops last km.
4. If it rained yesterday, DON'T go. Clay trail becomes soap.

How to Get There - Step by Step Trek

1. FREE Parking at De Contra: Hamlet of Roccamorice. Follow to Roccamorice, then De Contra signs. Last km dirt but ok with small car.

2. Trail SP22: Wooden sign "Eremo San Bartolomeo 40 min". First downhill in woods, then panoramic traverse, last 10 min uphill on stone steps. Bring 1L water.

3. What to bring: Torch for inside (dark), trekking shoes, no strollers, no flip-flops. Dogs on leash allowed.
